How can I learn to love my body again?
I used to have anorexia and I gained weight again and have very little muscle but a lot of fat. I have the bones of a 70 year old even though I'm just 18. I feel guilty when I eat and am not sure what to eat and I feel guilty for indulging in anything I feel comfort in.
i suffered from anorexia for the last 5 years. only now at 23, am i finally prepared to confront the disease and move on. the problem a lot of people don't realise is that often once you gain weight the 'voices' and thoughts can become much stronger for awhile. with this in mind, i found it was best to approach every day individually and work on achieving small goals each day.
how we perceive our bodies to be will unfortunately never be accurate due to what we have been through. you will develop muscle again, but you body is just working on getting back to a healthy place again.
as well as seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist i was also seeing a dietician who gave me new meal plans each week. she also helped me know how to incorporate 'treats' into my diet and now i can honestly say i am able to enjoy having a piece of cake. it's not easy at the beginning and it really takes a lot of will power, but once you learn to trust the experts and value yourself, it is much easier to love your life.
i don't have any dillusions about evering loving myself, i think there will always be moments when you look in the mirror and think how you'd like to change something, but there are also times when i look in the mirror and am really happy to be me. everytime you have those thoughts about being inadequate, fat, gross whatever, try not to just accept them as the truth, challenge them, even if you don't know if you believe them.
take each day one at a time, you can't expect to change your thought pattern overnight, but it is possible over time, and the best thing that i have gained which i would never give up is happiness and self assurance.
