Where does the prejudice against ginger people originate from?
My friend from Germany asked why we were all poking fun at a ginger haired co-worker and, unlike the French, Irish, American and various other nationalities for which there are several reasons, I couldn't think of one for ginger people other than, "Because they're ginger." Is it just another inherited prejudice from being raised in England or is there a more historical origin?
Please note: I'm not condoning racism or prejudice in any way, so don't have a go at me for asking.
Gingerism originated when the English were trying to find fault with the celts. A distinguishing feature of the celts were their fiery red hair. English leaders told their people that because they had red hair that they were witches and warlocks to make their people feel hatred towards the celts. People then forgot why they hated red-heads after a while but continued to do it because it had always been done.
Gingerism is actually a recognised "crime" and is illegal in the UK but not that punishable for.
