Thuja Green Giants changing colors in spring?
I planted 6 GG last October, they went through a very cold winter and seem to be fine until now.
When I planted them, the color is dark green but as soon as spring comes(it's April now), they start to show some yellow and brown here and there...even the tips...is this normal growing process? Are they shedding the bad parts and growing the new ones?
I am very worried....
It is normal for Arborvitae to get brown branches and leaf tips after winter. They should recover fine. It is most likely just burn from the cold. There can be other problems like too much water that would cause their demise. If you planted them in heavy clay soil or planted them in an area where water congregates then you need to move them or plant them higher with a mound or burm. Just a few brown tips or some brown branches is not bad but a general yellowing of all the foliage is not a good sign.If that is waht is happening then take a shovel or small trowel and dig next to one of the plants to see if there is excess water in the hole. If there is water puddling in the hole you need to move them quickly or they will die. It may be too late though if there was too much water.
